报告题目:Biodiversity Conservation in Bangladesh
Mohammad Abdul Aziz博士是孟加拉国贾汉吉尔纳加尔大学动物学教授。他于2017年取得英国肯特大学博士学位,博士研究聚焦于孟加拉国孙德尔本斯地区孟加拉虎的种群生态学与进化保护遗传学。
Aziz教授从事野生动物研究与保护工作已逾二十年,重点关注濒危物种及其栖息地。他的研究涵盖孟加拉虎、恒河豚、亚洲象、渔猫、孟加拉狐等小型食肉动物以及蝙蝠。自2015年起,他主导了孟加拉国政府在该国孙德尔本斯地区基于相机捕捉技术的孟加拉虎种群评估,并召开虎的猎物种群及栖息地承载力研究。
他亦深度参与国家野生动物保护规划工作,曾作为首席技术专家牵头制定孟加拉国恒河豚和伊洛瓦底海豚的保护行动计划。其研究领域广泛涉及野生动物种群监测、保护遗传学、人与野生动物冲突、濒危物种及其栖息地的循证管理等。
Aziz教授是孟加拉国动物学会终身会员,担任世界自然保护联盟(IUCN)物种生存委员会亚洲象专家组成员。因其在孟加拉虎方面的卓越研究工作,他荣获肯特大学颁发的达雷尔保护生物学奖(2017–2018年)。2023年,他取得由孟加拉国总理亲自颁发的孟加拉野生动物保护领域最高国家荣誉奖——“班加班杜野生动物保护奖”。
Presentation brief:
Bangladesh, situated within the Ganges–Brahmaputra–Meghna river system and at the northern edge of the Bay of Bengal, is a country of remarkable biological and ecological diversity. Its forests, wetlands, rivers, floodplains, coastal ecosystems and mangroves support a wide range of threatened species, including Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, river dolphins, otters and numerous other wildlife.
This presentation will explore Bangladesh’s biodiversity, its ecological significance, and the growing challenges to conservation arising from habitat loss, rapid development, pollution, climate change and human–wildlife conflict. Particular attention will be given to the Sundarbans, the world’s largest contiguous mangrove forest, and to the lesser-known marine biodiversity of the Bay of Bengal, including the Swatch of No Ground, a remarkable deep-sea ecosystem.
Drawing on long-term field research and conservation experience, the presentation will highlight approaches to wildlife monitoring and population assessment, while illustrating both achievements and emerging challenges.
The talk will conclude by exploring opportunities for Bangladesh–China scientific cooperation, particularly in biodiversity research, ecological monitoring, river and wetland conservation, and the application of modern technologies for understanding and protecting threatened ecosystems.
